Electric scooters have become an extremely popular mode of transport in recent years. Following this surge in users, several municipalities have decided to say "STOP" to many practices on the road!
Want to ride safely and be the perfect rider in your city? Shapeheart explains everything about the rules of riding an electric scooter.
POINT N°1
The rider
First of all, it is important to make sure you are yourself legally compliant to ride an electric scooter.
The minimum age to ride in urban areas is 12 years old. Yes, an electric scooter is a motorized vehicle, so it is not suitable for younger children. Make sure to also equip yourself and wear a helmet on the road (riding with your hair in the wind will have to wait...).
Civil liability insurance should not be overlooked when riding either: for your safety and the safety of others.
POINT N°2
Where can I ride?
Where can you ride legally? Well... not everywhere!
The cycle lane is obviously the preferred route for all two-wheelers. However, if you can't find a cycle lane nearby, you are allowed to ride on roads with a speed limit of less than 50km/h.
It is also possible to ride on pedestrian areas, in the absence of a cycle lane. In this situation, you must not exceed 6km/h.

POINT N°3
Free-floating scooters: the case of Paris
It was on April 2nd that Parisians went to the polls to have their say on the issue of free-floating scooters. A near unanimous vote, with more than 89% of votes cast against their use.
From September 1, 2023, you will no longer find free-floating scooters in the capital. Paris is not the first major metropolis to ban their rental, and many cities are expected to follow suit.
This ban does not prevent you from purchasing an electric scooter for personal use.
« Tonight, the people of Paris voted very overwhelmingly against free-floating scooters. Their very clear message is now our roadmap. With my team, we will act on their decision. »
- Anne Hidalgo, Mayor of Paris
POINT N°4
Maintain your vehicle!
Just like a car that is regularly maintained and checked, it is equally important to take care of your vehicle. For the safety of others, but above all for your own, remember to regularly check the reliability of your brakes, your battery and your tires.
It is also mandatory to be equipped with a braking system, an audible warning device, lights (front and rear) and rear and side reflective devices.
And don't forget, all of this is for the safety of everyone.
You're finally ready to hit the road! Properly equipped with your helmet, your scooter, and above all with all these rules in mind... you are now a pro at electric scooters!
