Summer storms on a motorcycle: keeping your smartphone dry

9 July 2026·5 min de lecture

A sky that turns grey in five minutes, the first drops on your visor, and your phone on the handlebars with no protection. That's the classic summer scenario. A brief shower is enough for water to seep into the charging port or under a case not designed for it. Here's how to choose the right protection for your use.

Key points
  • In summer, storms can arrive fast and last a while. Waterproof protection is worth it even if you don't ride in all weather.
  • Our camera window sleeve protects from rain while keeping the lens free — ideal if you film without taking your smartphone out of the sleeve.
  • The 100% waterproof sleeve offers maximum protection with a built-in camera insert: enhanced water resistance for the heaviest downpours.
  • IP ratings (IPX4, IPX6, IP68) are easy to understand. The key point: a certification in static fresh water is not the same as heavy rain at 90 km/h.

Why water is a real risk

A modern smartphone resists light splashes. But on a motorcycle, water arrives laterally, carried by high-speed air — nothing like a certification lab. The pressure of a shower at 90 km/h far exceeds what an IP standard measures in static fresh water.

The vulnerable areas are the same on almost every device: charging port, speaker, headphone connector. Water ingress can corrode contacts or short-circuit the motherboard. And this damage is not covered by the manufacturer's warranty, which generally excludes liquids — even on IP-certified models.

This is confirmed by biker feedback: incidents happen during a high-speed downpour, not during a light drizzle at a standstill.

Even an IP67-certified iPhone or Samsung can suffer in heavy rain at 90 km/h. External protection remains the most reliable choice for riding with peace of mind.

The camera window sleeve: riding in the rain without sacrificing the lens

The best protection / video compromise

The camera window sleeve provides free access to the rear lens via a dedicated cutout. It protects against splashes and ordinary showers without blocking access to the camera. If you film your rides, road trips, or mountain passes, this is the go-to starting point.

The spare camera window sleeve integrates into the magnetic system: a single gesture to attach or remove the phone, even with gloves. It fits all mounts in the range: handlebars, stem, mirror.

The waterproof sleeve: when the rain doesn't stop

Maximum protection, built-in camera insert

The 100% waterproof sleeve offers enhanced water resistance, close to IP68, with a camera insert to keep filming even in a heavy downpour. Made for long road trips, unpredictable mountain passes, or daily commutes in grey weather.

IP68Submersion up to 1.5 m for 30 minutes in fresh water (IEC 60529 standard). But a shower at motorcycle speed is nothing like static fresh water: the sleeve remains the true safeguard.

Important nuance: IP68 is measured in a lab. In real conditions, at motorcycle speed, don't count on prolonged immersion. The waterproof sleeve protects against splashes and showers, not a drop into a river.

Understanding IP ratings

The IP (Ingress Protection) rating is defined by the international standard IEC 60529. Two digits: the first for solids (dust), the second for water.

  • IPX4: resistance to splashes from all directions. Sufficient for light rain in traffic.
  • IPX6: resistance to powerful water jets. Better protection during heavy showers.
  • IP67: submersion up to 1 m for 30 minutes in fresh water.
  • IP68: submersion beyond 1 m (conditions defined by the manufacturer). The highest level for common smartphones.

In practice on a motorcycle: an ordinary shower corresponds to IPX4 to IPX6. A prolonged downpour at high speed demands more from the protection. Apple publishes IP ratings and recommended conditions for each iPhone (Apple Support).

What if you ride without a sleeve?

Some bikers prefer to mount their phone bare with an adhesive metal plate stuck to the back of the case. The device stays exposed to the air, which avoids the greenhouse effect in intense heat. In the rain, it's a different story: without a sleeve, the phone is directly exposed. Two things to know:

  • Vibrations reach the phone more directly. Apple advises against mounting an iPhone on a high-displacement motorcycle engine without protection: prolonged exposure to high-amplitude vibrations can degrade the camera's optical image stabilization (Apple Support). The anti-vibration module sits between the mount and the phone to limit this transmission.
  • No rain protection. The metal plate alone does not protect against water. If you ride in bad weather, a sleeve remains essential.

5 reflexes when the rain hits

  1. Check the weather before you head out. Summer storms often give a few hours' warning. Prepare your protection while dry, not in the rain with wet gloves.
  2. Fit the sleeve before you ride. A sleeve slips on in a few seconds when stationary. Doing it while riding in the rain is much trickier.
  3. Check the seal. A lifted or improperly closed edge provides no protection against splashes.
  4. Don't charge in the rain. Water in the charging port, even briefly, can cause serious damage. Wait until you're sheltered.
  5. Dry the port before plugging back in. After a shower, let the connector dry for 15 to 20 minutes before plugging in a cable.

Frequently asked questions

My phone is IP67. Do I need a sleeve when it rains on the motorcycle?

IP67 certification protects against submersion in static fresh water up to 1 m. It does not guarantee resistance to high-speed dynamic jets. For prolonged showers or wet roads at high speed, a sleeve is still recommended.

Does the camera window sleeve really keep the lens free?

Yes, that's its main design feature: a dedicated cutout keeps the rear lens accessible for photos and videos. Image quality is maintained, even while riding in light rain.

Can you switch sleeves depending on the weather?

Yes. Shapeheart sleeves are interchangeable spare accessories. You can have two (camera window and waterproof) and choose based on conditions, without changing your mount or your phone.

Does the sleeve also protect against vibrations?

The classic sleeve absorbs some vibrations, but that's not its primary function. For specific camera protection, the anti-vibration module is designed for that.
