It's a question we receive almost every week, and have done for 7 years — so let's set the record straight so you know everything there is to know about our magnets.
When we created our first magnetic mounts for running, cycling and motorcycles, we heard for a long time that magnets were dangerous for phones and other electronic devices.
So we opened some books, put on our reading glasses, and decided to do some research to find out where this rumor came from and whether it was actually founded.
Where does this idea come from?
An idea dating back to the 90s
A brief step back in time is in order…
Back then, data was stored on hard drives that could become demagnetized and lose all their data. But these hard drives were never used in smartphones, which have always had flash memory, completely unaffected by magnetic fields.
The same goes for old cathode ray tube televisions! When a magnet was brought close, its magnetic field altered the trajectory of the moving electrons hitting the screen. The most common result was a kaleidoscopic color effect, meaning the colors were scattered across the area where the magnet touched the screen. Likewise, this technology was never used in smartphones.
About our Sleeves...
The absence of a magnetic field inside our Sleeves
The idea that magnets are dangerous for smartphones is therefore false.
The technologies used by smartphones are different and are not affected by contact with a magnet, as long as its force is not extreme (the kind of magnets capable of breaking a finger) and the contact is not indefinite (several months).
Even though our magnets are ultra-powerful (supporting up to 50 times the weight of a phone), the magnetic field inside the sleeve is non-existent.
Indeed, it is important to note that there is a metal plate 1.5 mm thick on the phone side. This metal plate completely blocks the magnetic field.
You can actually test this yourself by trying to magnetize a small object inside the sleeve: it's not possible. The reason is simple — there is virtually no magnetic field inside the sleeve, and therefore near your phone.
